KAMOS AR ART GALLERY: Japan’s First Gallery Devoted to Augmented Reality Art

In the lakeside town of Kawaguchi, just steps from the iconic view of Mt. Fuji, a new kind of art space is drawing attention. The KAMOS AR ART GALLERY is not just a gallery; it’s Japan’s first venue dedicated entirely to augmented reality (AR) art, and it's quickly becoming a unique cultural destination for art and tech lovers alike.
Founded by pioneering artist Takayuki Hibino and rising AR talent Hakko Ebi, the gallery was created to showcase the potential of Artivive-powered works that blend physical art with interactive digital layers.
Despite the increasing presence of AR in entertainment and marketing, public awareness of AR in the art world remains relatively low. This is exactly what Hibino and Ebi aim to change. They believe AR should not just be a novelty, but an artistic medium in its own right, one that adds emotional and narrative depth to physical works.
Their solution? A gallery that not only displays but invites visitors to interact with AR art. Whether scanning a large-scale painting to trigger a 3D animation or discovering hidden motion graphics in a character print, visitors get more than just a visual experience – they become part of the art.
Located in a popular tourist destination, the gallery naturally attracts a steady stream of visitors from around the world. Inside, the works on display rotate four times a year and include both large and small-scale pieces. According to Ebi, viewers are especially drawn to the projects made with 3D graphics, which bring an extra layer of depth, motion, and surprise.

Visitors often interact with the works by walking around them, taking photos, and even saving the AR experience to view again later. This multi-angle engagement is turning passive viewers into active participants.
To bring a playful, local touch to AR art, the gallery introduced something uniquely Japanese: Gacha-pon (capsule toy) machines. For just a few yen, visitors can get a token and receive a surprise AR-activated item such as a sticker, badge, or magnet with original artworks.
As Hibino puts it, the real value of contemporary art lies not just in physical objects but in the experience artists offer. With this in mind, the gallery’s merchandise isn’t just a souvenir—it's a gateway to AR exploration.
Though still in its early stages, KAMOS AR ART GALLERY is already building a community around immersive art. As Hibino and Ebi continue to develop 3D-printed collectables and explore new AR formats, their goal is to establish the gallery as a launchpad for AR-focused collaborations across Japan and East Asia.
