AR isn’t just a tool, it’s a portal - Artist Interview with Superama

”Augmented reality is a bridge between the visible and the invisible. It lets me invite people into my world, into my story, where imagination becomes movement and emotion becomes sound.”

Ethereal Bloom by Superama

Meet Superama, a Venezuelan-born visual artist and creative director who is reshaping the world of augmented reality art. Based in Miami, her work blends traditional illustration with dynamic AR experiences, bringing fashion items like shoes, sweaters, jackets and more to life. With Artivive, Superama pushes the boundaries of creativity, creating interactive art that engages audiences and changes the way we experience fashion and storytelling. In this interview, she talks about her journey with AR, the value it adds to her art, and how it is revolutionizing art.

Do you remember the first AR piece you created with Artivive - and did it turn out as you imagined?

Yes, I do! It was during the pandemic. I had been commissioned to create an illustration for E! Online, and since I finally had some time, I decided to dive into this app I had heard about for a while — Artivive. I was genuinely impressed by how easy and intuitive it was to learn. I think I had delayed trying it because I thought it would be more complicated, but it wasn’t at all. My background in animation definitely helped, but honestly, the app made the whole process super fun. I instantly fell in love with it — and since that very first piece, I haven’t stopped using Artivive.

What value does augmented reality bring to your creative process and the art you create?

I see it as two different moments. When I start creating any artwork, I already design or illustrate it with movement in mind, even if it’s a static piece. Then, when I add animation, the artwork truly comes to life. And after that, there's this magical moment of interaction with the viewer.

That’s where the WOW factor comes in. I love seeing people’s faces when they view my work through Artivive. It creates a whole new experience. Before the AR, they might admire or like the piece, but after seeing the animation, there’s a spark of joy. You can feel a deeper connection forming between the artwork, the viewer, and myself. It’s beautiful and fulfilling to witness.

We are big fans of your AR shoes and clothes! How did you get the idea of augmenting fashion items come to you?

I’ve always loved fashion and animation, so one day while I was customizing a pair of sneakers for a client, the idea just clicked… what if the illustration could move? That would be so cool! I wasn’t sure if it would work because the artwork on the shoe wasn’t flat, but I decided to test it. I animated a tiger in Procreate, imported the animation into Artivive, and took a good photo of the sneaker with the tiger design. When I saw it come to life, I got so excited! I went back and started adding even more elements. I even added music to the shoe!

That’s exactly what I love about Artivive: you can keep updating and enhancing your work. There are no limits, it keeps evolving.

What is your community‘s reaction to your AR clothing pieces?

My community absolutely loves them! I always receive so many messages and comments from people who are excited and curious, wanting to learn how it’s done. I’ve actually taught several friends how they can elevate their own artwork — not just on shoes, but also on tote bags, t-shirts, hoodies… I’ve created so many pieces with augmented reality.

What I love the most is that it’s not only visual. You can also add sound, a voice, or a message. It engages so many senses and creates a joyful, interactive experience. Now I’m just waiting for you guys to add scents too! Hahaha

Beyond fashion, you’ve created stunning AR prints and exhibition pieces. How do you decide which elements of your art come to life in AR?

At this point, almost every artwork I create includes augmented reality. After a few exhibitions where I saw people’s faces light up when they experienced the AR, it became impossible for me to create art without adding that extra layer of connection.

For me, it’s not just about the “wow” factor — it’s about creating a dialogue and a deeper bond with the viewer. I see it all the time at exhibitions, it makes collectors even more interested in owning the piece because they know they’re getting something unique, something that not everyone is offering.

You’ve also worked on AR artworks for clients. Would you say that being an AR artist makes you stand out when clients are choosing someone for a unique commission?

Most of the time, clients don’t even realize that I can take their brand experience to another level with AR. They’re always surprised when I show them what’s possible. Especially at big events like trade shows, I’ve created AR walls for their booths and even added AR to their merch — like tote bags and t-shirts. Later, they always reach out to tell me how it made them stand out, how they were the only ones offering something so fun and unique.

I know that’s something people remember. It becomes an advantage when they’re deciding who to hire next. I always make sure to give a little extra, something unexpected that makes their brand feel more special. And being recognized as the artist who brings everything to life with augmented reality? That’s definitely a plus.

Do you feel like AR helps you tell stories in a way that clients really resonate with?

Absolutely! AR is a powerful tool that allows you to build and share a story. When people look at an artwork, they can interpret it in many different ways. Sometimes in ways that aren’t exactly what you intended. But with AR, you can guide that experience and deliver the message you want to share. You can add poetry, music, movement… it becomes an immersive and unique experience that people won’t easily forget. Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about an image — it’s about the story behind it. Storytelling is what people truly connect with. When someone experiences your art and feels something, when they see a piece of your story in it, that’s when real connection happens. Sharing a part of yourself through your work is what makes art unforgettable. That’s the real beauty of it.

How has using AR helped you stand out in the art and fashion world compared to more traditional mediums?

Now, people expect my artworks to have augmented reality. Whenever I share my creative process, I always get comments like, “I can’t wait to see it come to life!” And I love that, because they know my work doesn’t stop at what they see. There’s always something more, something hidden waiting to be discovered.

That’s the beauty of AR: the experience keeps evolving. Maybe a year after you’ve collected one of my pieces, I’ll update it with a new message, a different animation, or even a new tune. It becomes a living artwork. Something that keeps surprising you every time you come back to it.

Where do you go or what do you do when you need a fresh burst of creativity?

I go out for a run. I’ve been running for over 15 years, and that’s when my best ideas usually come to me. Even though artists love to stay inside, creating in their own world, I truly believe it’s essential to step outside, go for a walk, move your body, breathe fresh air, and connect with nature. It’s the best way to clear your mind and recharge.

In a world where we’re constantly surrounded by technology, it’s so important to pause, disconnect, and give your brain space to breathe. That’s when creativity flows back in.

What advice would you give to other artists who are curious about integrating AR into their work?

I would say go for it! So many incredible opportunities and meaningful connections have come into my life thanks to AR, and none of it would have happened without discovering Artivive. New skills open new doors, and AR is a powerful tool to expand your creativity.

Also, don’t underestimate the value of the community. When you share knowledge and connect with other like-minded artists, it sparks new ideas and inspires you to keep evolving. You never know where that first AR piece might lead you — but I can promise it will be somewhere exciting.

Lastly, what’s next for you in the world of augmented reality art — any upcoming projects or ideas you’re excited to explore?

I have an upcoming exhibition in New York City, and I’m really excited because I’ll be creating a special jacket with AR for it. Now that Artivive has the new feature where people can experience the artwork without needing to download the app, it opens up even more possibilities. It makes it so much easier for everyone to enjoy the animation — and by the way, thank you for adding that feature! I know so many artists, including myself, are thrilled about it. The artwork I’ll be exhibiting will also include AR, of course. So stay tuned — I’m always working on new ways to surprise and connect with my audience.

For me, AR isn’t just a tool, it’s a portal. A bridge between the visible and the invisible. It lets me invite people into my world, into my story, where imagination becomes movement and emotion becomes sound. It’s like whispering secrets through colors and motion and watching them land in someone else’s heart.
